There are several kinds of releases that come from the hands of Avant! Records, and I know what are my favorite ones. Every once in a while comes a dark album that stands on a cold, wet stone in the middle of the realm of folk music, while sending defying fingers towards drone, dark ambient and other types of music. This self titled album by “How Much Wood Would A Woodchuck Chuck If A Woodchuck Could Chuck Wood?” is a fine example. Slow drones and distant, vibrating guitars are the body and blood for the chilling chanting that diffuses through the music like creeping moonfog. The alienated chanting, vague and menacing, reminds of old spiritual front songs, mixed in the black cauldron with some cvlt black metal mantras, so we have a beautiful resurrection of ancient witchery through the slow, cold sound of no wave guitars and hostile electronic whispering. Beautiful like an old, wooden rune.
